Rusty Comfrey

Can't identify that mould? Got a great tip for keeping slugs at bay? Suggestions for organic weed control? Post them here...

My comfrey is growing very well, but quite a few of the older leaves are 'rusty' and seem to crumble away and die. Any ideas as to what this is and whether it poses any danger to other plants? I think it first appeared some time last year.

Colin

Rust is a common problem with comfrey. See this.

Thanks Alan. Guess I will have to live with it.

While we're on the subject of comfrey, I've noticed that advice on the forum is to use 'wilted' comfrey on compost heaps etc. Is there any particular reason why it should be wilted?

A good use for comfrey is to put a pile of it on ground you are going to plant out in and then check underneath and dispose of any slugs. Do this for a few days and the ground should be almost slug-free before you plant your seedlings, and the comfrey can go on the compost heap.
