Growing Alliums

I've grown some of the large decorative alliums for the first time. The flower heads are impressive but just before the flower heads burst open all the leaves started to look yellow and withered like dying daffodil leaves. Is this usual or have I neglected to do something which could have caused this? I've been watering them regularly whenever the soil looked dry.

That's a pity because when I've seen them at garden centres in full flower in pots the leaves have always looked green and glossy and the dying leaves look rather unsightly. Presumably, like daffodil leaves, I will have to live with them while they wither or risk the bulbs losing nourishment for next year? My "tidy" instincts amke me tempted to trim them off.
