We have had three lots of Jersey Royal potatoes for our suppers recently and we dont think that they are tasting the same as they used to. One lot was from M&S and the others were from Morrisons and Aldi. Has anyone else had the same problem?
Yes! We had some from Aldi and another lot from Waitrose and they were both 'soapy'. Vastly different in price but just the same in texture and flavour. In fact, both were vastly improved when fried as left over cold potatoes.
Roll on my first earlies.

Scraped away some soil from my earlies,(under poly) and picked some that were visible, they were hen egg size, and they tasted terrible, well no taste at all.
Will wait a week or so before trying again

We grew JR last year but they were tasteless. Did not bother this year. Do you think it is sandy soil on Jersey or the seaweed fertilizer that gives them their taste??

Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

The very strange thing is that a few years back on this forum when I recommended Maris Bard I was howled down. Told that they were nothing but slug attractants and always full of scab. Now it appears that they are back in favour. I have never not grown MB but have trialed many different modern earlies and I have never managed to find anything that will beat them for flavour and overall performance.
I had a heart attack some years back and couldn't harvest my earlies until late October and the good old Maris Bard were by that time enormous and still tasted wonderful. At the size they were I enjoyed them as Baked Potatoes!
Alan, I do hope you enjoy them as I truly think they are for sure one of the best of the earlies.
JB.

Hello Johnboy
Have not grown MB but a few years back grew one row of Maris Piper, I did not get "ONE" potato harvested, they were all eaten by keel slugs, non of the other varieties had much/any damage to them !!!
Cheers

Hi Monika I have never seen Anya potatoes offered anywhere. Where do you get your potatoes from? I have had at least four visits to LBS recently I got some shuttle trays from 70p and some cabbage collars, seeds and other bits and pieces. I think I have become adicted to shopping in these sorts of shops. Never mind designer shops give me a gardening shop any time.

Taste is of course a subjective experience but I, like JB, have always considered Maris Bard to be the best. They are not the earliest but are worth waiting for, it would be interesting to hear from you Alan and the other MB growers on the forum what they tasted like this year, I shall have to be patient for a little longer.
I hope that you wiil be pleased with them.

We get our Anya potatoes from Thompson and Morgan. The first lot was sent to us as a "freebie" about four years ago from T&M and we have ordered them ever since. They are a cross between Pink Fir Apple and Desiree.
