Dear Catherine, i would say it's a type of Bumble bee, but what it's proper name is, is a different matter.
Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

Hi OH, You're early again. I thought it might be a kind of bumble bee but didn't know its name. Looked in a book I have but couldn't find it. Very big but lovely. I have been trying to plant up my back garden with plants which attract bees though nothing is out yet. So I might see it again.
