Birds' nests everywhere

We only have a smallish garden but at the last count we had two pairs of blackbirds nesting, one robin pair (all feeding young), two blue tit pairs in boxes, a dunnock pair and this morning a female greenfinch started carrying lots of nesting material into our ivy overgrown cotoneaster tree. When we moved here in 1981, we designed the garden with wildlife in mind with several planned thickets and ivy growing thickly on dry stone walls - and it's certainly paying off! I am just hoping that all the eggs and youngsters will survive the attention of cats and magpies!
It looks like being a good year for birds at our allotments too, all very busy. In the last week or so I've seen a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a nuthatch on my fat-ball feeders for the first time, as well as the usual gang of tits, finches, robins et al. More thrushes than usual too. All good news.

The Greater Spotted Woodpecker has certainly been having some fun in one of old Cherries at work...

Meanwhile, the Kingfisher has been making its shrill note on the pondside...so we hope another nest there too..
Owls too making plenty of noise during daytime last week..

I have a robin's nest in the top of a compost bag which is propped against the fence on my plot. I damn nearly tipped the bag up this morning as I thought the "squeaking" noise was a mouse or rat in there. Turned out to be a nest of six baby robins, all with their beaks wide open and squeaking away
I put the bag back really carefully and then sat and watched with great relief as our resident robin popped in and out with worms. It's a brilliant nest with plastic sides and a roof , I just hope the rats don't find them as they emptied the blackbird's nest of eggs last week.
