Spent a few hours turning over the soil in one of my 4 plots today to take advantage of the drying sun. As I was digging dozens of tiny white flies seemed to be emerging from the soil. Are these actually "white fly" or possibly some other beastie? Am I doing any harm `releasing` them from the soil?

I've got no idea what these white flies are Brooklynnodog,
the only single thing i can think of is, if the ground has just been cleared of brassicas and the flies have fell off onto the soil.
A bit of a long shot i know.

Thanks, but no, the ground was left empty of crops over winter. I just turned over the soil to aerate it and let the sun dry and warm it.
