Morning Mike,
Two years ago I bought my one year old asparagus crowns from T and J A Sore (Mildenhall 01638 712779.) I paid £66 for 100 Backlim F.1. I also bought 100 Gijnlim from them for a similar cost. The information brochure that came with the crowns explained they planted 40" between rows 12" apart 4" deep or 36" between rows 18" apart 4" deep!
According to there info. brochure, spears may be cut in the second year after planting. During the first harvest cropping should cease at the end of May but in subsequent years it may continue on until the 21st June. They cut the spears when 8" above the ground and 1" below the soil.
Last year my first spears came through on 16th April but I notice in todays newspaper that Sainsburys will be putting their British grown asparagus on sale 16th March!!
Hope this helps. Now I am off to my allotment to cover my asparagus plot with fleece tunnels.

Costs no more to keep a pedigree than a mongrel!
One tip I learned recently - don't grow potatoes next to your asparagus - they don't get on. I made that mistake last year and got a lousy crop from both, apparently that was why. Asparagus does like parsley though and you can pop a few plants between the crowns to save on space. I haven't tried this myself yet but will this year - i'm getting more interested in companion planting and finding out what things don't make good bed-fellows is just as important. For instance nasturtiums don't get on with runner beans.. who knew?
