I was saddened to learn of the recent death of Everest climber and explorer Sir Edmund Hillary; a truly great man and one deserving to be called Sir. (Unlike the honours given out in modern times with the Christmas crackers to many an obnoxious arse wobbling guitar strumming moron.)

You may ask why he should be remembered on a garden forum; my reason is that Sir Edmund was a Beekeeper and an admirer of the Ferguson Tractors that were used in his epic Antarctic expedition. The Ferguson, in any knowledgeable person’s view was also one of the greatest aids to modern food production.

January 4th 1958 was the day Sir Edmund Hillary reached The South Pole, after a grueling journey of 1,200 miles across some of the worst terrain known to man. Much of his success was down to the Little Grey Fergie which 'performed magnificently...and made our trip to the Pole possible.'
Not a bad achievement for a humble farm tractor...Courtesy of Friends of Ferguson Heritage

Yesterday's Telegraph says the Queen isn't sending a representative to the funeral - another reason for off with their heads!

Yes Geoff, I also read the Telegraph with some dismay. I can’t help thinking if it was one of their showbiz cronies that had died then at least the younger members of the Royals would be flocking over like flies round a cow pat.

Times and standards have changed, unfortunately not for the better.

Hillary on Everest - still a good programme despite the sad politics at the end. Anybody with me that it was the second ascent?
