Have just come across this tip for keeping tools lubricated and rust free. Next time you change the oil in your car, pour it into a bucket of sand and add your garden tools. The grit from the sand holds the oil and polishes the metal surfaces. Tools hold fast in the sand and are ready for use. Just don't forget to clean tools before and after use with an old cotton rag. As I'm unlikely to be changing the oil in my car myself but am often guilty of leaving my various hand trowels and forks around in the rain I'm wondering if my old cooking oil would do just as well?

the only problem i can think of is the cooking oil may go solid in a cold shed so you may have to scrape the sand oil mix off the tools before use.
