A couple of months ago I picked a purple kohl rabi but didn't eat it as intended. To keep it fresh I stuck it on top of a jam jar full of water and forgot about it.

A few weeks later I noticed that it was growing new roots. Then the old foliage died off but now it's sprouting away like crazy. There's a mass of roots in the jar and four big leaves.

What should I do with it? I suspect it may be a bit woody to eat and it does in fact look quite pretty.

Any ideas what will happen if I just let it keep growing in water? :D

Well you could leave it in there, where I guess it will use up the reserves in the bulgy bit. If planted in soil, it sounds like there's a good chance it will carry on.

I guess it's indoors at the moment and that it might not appreciate garden temperatures!

Either way you should certainly be able to get some usable leaves (ok, 1 KR = half a portion!). Excellent fresh fodder for a rabbit or guinea pig though.

What was your final verdict on the Kohl Rabi from 2007 then Chantal? This year was the first time I've ever grown (or eaten) it. It seemed to do well both steamed, stir fried and used grated in salads/coleslaw. Purple & green seemed to taste similar, but I prefered the appearance of the purple.

Dear Chantal, instead of trying to save a few pennies, why don't you just buy a Poinsettia like most other people.

No need OH, I still have my poinsettia from last year. Really.

As for the kohl rabi, that one purple one is the only purple one that grew so I have no idea what it tastes like.

I have some white ones at the lottie but haven't picked them yet. I'll report back when I've tried them, if I've not left it too late.

Chantal, young kohlrabi leaves are lovely chopped up into vegetable soup, like a herb. Just imparts a pleasant, very faint cabbagey taste.

Thanks Monika, that sounds like a good idea. This kohl rabi has been with me so long I don't think I could eat it (too fond of it  ) but snaffling some leaves would be OK. :D
