As my allotment connects to a deer park and wood I get a lot of wildlife, lovely at times but....
Has anyone experience of using those sonic animal deterent machines? I have seen one that will run on batteries and its range would cover much of my plot. I'd not keep it on all year, but when the sweetcorn was at risk of badger attack, or when I find signs of rats.
Is it worth the 30 quid?

I have been trialling a mains one in our shed for a month
still catching mice in traps 3 feet from it and hearing rats run when I turn the light on....
I borrowed it. Don't think I'd recommend on.
Di, I think you would be better off investing in electric netting an a 12v fencer. and traps for the rats

Hi Di,
We used to be trouble with Deer amongst just about everything else. Having enclosed 5 acres against Sheep and Cattle and Rabbits I sat back feeling very secure and then the Deer would leap over everything and browse my nursery stock. I had to extend the fencing and put an extra 3 high tensile steel wires and then purchase some stainless steel discs. These discs were nailed to the extended posts at varying angles and hung spasmodically from the wires. The deer attacks came at night and is there is a moon about the reflections from the discs deters them they also see in the dark and after that no more deer attacks. Locally the Forestry Commission had trialed this method to stop deer getting onto the very busy trunk road with some severe motor accidents and many dead deer. It works very well. This was all before CD's and DVD's which will work equally as well and they come considerably cheaper than stainless steel. Normally pig/sheep netting will, to a degree, deter Badgers but if they have a mind to tear it down they are powerful enough to do so. Protection really only comes at a considerable price as it cost me a few thousand squid and that was 25 years ago. I have had to repair the fencing recently as part of the fencing extension blew down in a gale and within a matter of days the deer were in again but after 25 years what's a small repair and that is the only repair in the 25 years.
