brambles

Can't identify that mould? Got a great tip for keeping slugs at bay? Suggestions for organic weed control? Post them here...

i have two well established gooseberry bushes which crop very well.
the trouble is that between them i have an excellent crop of blackberries which i do not want.
can anyone advise me on getting rid of the brambles without disturbing the gooseberries?

many thanks

Hi David,
Brambles are fairly shallow rooted and I feel that if you cut them back leaving something to get a hold of (around 9 inches) you may well tease them out of the ground by probing and pulling.
If the Gooseberry roots are entangled and you are very careful you will be able to extract the Bramble and slight disturbance to the Gooseberry will not really harm them at this time of the year.
Alternatively you can dig the Gooseberries out, with a good root ball, then deal with the Brambles and replant the Gooseberries, adding some form of fertilizer to the root, and at this time of the year, and if you are quick, they will never know that they have been out of the soil.
