Greenhouse algae

I cleared out our greenhouse today and hope to wash it down over the weekend. Quite a few of the panes are covered by green algae which, I know, will shift with lots of elbow grease and some greenhouse disinfectant, but is there an easier way? Could I spray something on before to soften it?

Monika - A strong solution of Jeyes Fluid & water effectively cleared some slimy algae off some of our paving slabs which were pemanently in winter shade but the liquid was allowed to rest for a while on a flat surface. Don't know whether it would work on glass panes where the liquid immediately drains off but if you've got any in stock it's worth a try.

Thanks for your replies, Primrose and Kevin. I was raring to go this morning and head neither Armillatox nor Jeyes Fluid, so I sprayed the algae with Mr Muscle Kitchen cleaner, left it for a bit and then washed it off with a sponge and it worked like a dream!

Next time I have slimy paths and have run out of Jeyes Fluid, I will reach for the Mr. Muscle !!

Try a search for Algon on this forum. It's the least work method and safe to use.

Much much cheaper.. and as effective. Vinegar.

I use surplus from pickled onions jars. Even cheaper. Makes cleaning much easier and leaves glass sparkling.

Also use on house windows and add to car washing water.

just add to a bucket of water.

No pollution, nice smell, hands OK..Cost: nil

What a clever idea, madasafish! My mother (would be well over 100 years old now were she alive) always put a dash of vinegar on the cloth when she cleaned the windows at home, so it's obviously a well tried method though I never thought of it for the greenhouse!
