Don't blame yourself. It's just a bad year for squashes. These plants need more warmth and light than we're getting at the moment. My indoor courgette is doing well but the two outdoor ones are about half the size with fewer and smaller fruits.
It's generally a good idea to cut off mildewed leaves as they don't do the plant much good anyway, but obviously you shouldn't cut off ALL the leaves.

Wish you could have some of mine. Thank God for Wellies' recipe for Courgette and Potato soup, which is excellent.
