Reported in Saturday’s Daily Telegraph

Compost worms add to burden of climate change.

Worms may not be as environmentally friendly as the gardeners who use them to compost kitchen scraps and grass clippings believe, say scientists.

After reading the report I immediately took responsible action and killed all the polluting little red b*ggers in my compost bin.

It’s hard to be green these days!

What they forgot to say, the pollution they cause is a lot less than taking the same amount of material to a landfill site.

Have you ever given the kiss of life to worms before Barney. :)

The article as usual is a load of ... compost!

If you extended the logic, all nitogen based fertilisers end up emitting some nitrous oxide on contact with earth ... So lets ban all fertilser!

And ban cows for the methane...

and journalists for hot air and carp..

Wouldn't any extra greenhouse gases be offset by the more vigorous plant growth after using the compost?

If you'd like to read the article this is it here:

I would have thought that if this is the case they should simply harvest the nitrous oxide. I'm sure there's a use for it - isn't it laughing gas?
If they can harvest gases from huge landfill sites they should be able to do the same from relatively contained giant wormeries.
I like my worms - I'm not going to kill them.

How is this nitrous oxide being expelled? Is someone trying to say my worms are farting too much?

This looks like "good headline" reporting to me and I'm going to continue composting anything that sits still for too long.
