Fruits on ornamental cherries

I have a dwarf ornamental cherry which -this year for the first time - has tiny black fruits on it, about the size of elderberries. Does anyone know if these are edible? A Google search hasn't produced an answer! Thanks.

As a child we had what my Dad called a bird cherry in the garden we used to eat some fruits as kids do I remember they were quite tart unless very black not at all like the cherries we eat :roll: and only a little flesh more stone !
