Slugs and egg shells

Can't identify that mould? Got a great tip for keeping slugs at bay? Suggestions for organic weed control? Post them here...

I can report that egg shells do not ward off slugs.

In an effort to grow some carrots this year, I surrounded the row of newly germinated carrots with what I thought was an impenetrable bank of crushed egg shells. It seemed to work during the fine weather, but the rain of the last couple of days has attracted the entire slug population of West London to my garden and this morning I found several fat slugs happily munching my carrot seedlings. They must have crossed the bank of eggs shells unless they parachuted in.

Time to try something else. At least I can cut back on my egg consumption.

Martin.

I've tried all the tricks - egg shells, copper bands, salt, grit, beer - which I have to say wasnt bad but it only takes 1 tee total bugger to ruin a row of seedlings  - and I have to say the one chemical I keep coming back to is the slug pellet. Covered where possible to avoid the birds eating toxic slugs. But at least I tried all the alternatives and the chemical decision wasnt rash and wanton but a last resort :(

.....and if someone could breed a species of dandelion and chickweed only eating slugs their wealth would outstrip that of Mr Gates and Mr Sugar combined!! :P
