In the last 2 years I planted out French beans in the last week of May only to have them skeletonised by strong winds almost immediately. I've just looked at the BBC 5-day forecast and seen that on Wednesday there is supposed to be wind of 30mph. Is this strong? I'm not ready to plant beans out yet but just wondered for in the future. Any views?

hi if you stick your hand ot the car window when its doing 30mph youll get an idea of what a 30mph wind feels like.
i planted out my french beans yesterday, they are surrounded by a shower door and fleece construction to keep the wind off. i also use the halves of french doors laid on their sides as wind breaks.

Dear Granny, if the wind speeds are going to be Thirty miles an hour, the gusts will be a bit stronger. And this is plenty strong enough to do the plants some damage.
Unless they are protected like Richards. :)
Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

That wind is pretty strong and I certainly wouldn't expose very young French beans to it. I agree with Richard P: we always make a double thickness fleece covered "frame" round our runner beans when they are first planted and French beans are completely covered with fleece for about a fortnight until they are settled a bit. One year all our runner beans ended up leafless from the strong wind, not a pretty sight!

Safely under wraps for a bit then. Thanks for your replies.
