I read somewhere (probably here!) that runners won't set if the temperature stays above 14 degrees at night. That made sense to me last year as I lost all my flowers when it was hot and then got a successful crop when the nighttime temperature fell.

Just to update - the runner bean roots i left in the ground last year - just started to come up. I don't think they are all behaving as well - but maybe about half are re growing - as i was sowing new seeds at the foot of each cane i found the little plants.
Note We had an exceptionally warm winter even for here this year - only dipped below 0 twice for a week at most each time. So i may not be so lucky next year although i will try again but this time make a mini polytunnel over the row.
