I've been out working in my veg garden all week and what a delight it was yesterday, Friday 13th, to see the first swallows of this year, here in SE Ireland.
Early for them, I think. I heard their familiar twittering overhead and looked up and saw a pair darting to and fro. Summer has arrived!. It has been a week of glorious gardening weather in these parts. Soon we'll be hoping for rain. None so far this month.

A swallow today in east Leics/ Rutland. Don't know if it's staying or just passing through.

Saw 2 on a telegraph wire yesterday when visiting in-laws in Warwickshire. No cuckoo yet, though.

Isn't it strange they are arriving all over the country at the same time rather than working North? Perhaps they set off as a flock then dive down to their "home" as the flock passes over it.
