onions from seed

I have never grown onions from seed before, always planted sets.
This year I am trying some from seed and the plants grown in modules are now about 3 inches tall. is it time to plant them out side yet. Answers please

Me too waiting for an answer to your query, I have grown red onions from seed for the 1st. time this year and wondered when is the best time to plant them out. We have planted the sets as well in case the seeds don't do well(belt and braces).

Depends where you live, I suppose. I always grow our onions from seeds and they, too, are about 3 inches high now and still in the unheated greenhouse overnight but outside during the day (at least during the last few warm days). I will plant them out in about 10 days' time, weather permitting, and cover them with fleece (the thinner stuff, 17grm) until about early May, then take the fleece off. We are in North Yorkshire and the allotment is fairly high up and very windy.

I have done well for a few years with onions from seed planted in clumps of about 5 by 12" apart. Diaries for last 4 years say I planted them out between 24th and 29th April so I won't be doing mine for a while, though they do seem to be growing quickly in the not so cold cold greenhouse. I see one of you is near junction 3 of the M58 where I turn off when visiting our factory in Kirkby, always looks nice land round there and I would think at least two weeks ahead of me.
