Used tea bags

now I'm really confused!
If adding teabags reduces the acidity then by definition the pH will rise.
How can it be possible to reduce the acidity and the pH at the same time?

Carl,
you are causing confusion with your choice of words.

A low pH is acid, a high pH alkaline. Teabags, if acid, will:-

a) reduce the pH value (i.e. more acidity)
b) increase the amount of acidity (i.e. more acidity)

Both exactly the same thing of course.

I can't stand handling cold tea bags, so I prefer to use leaf tea too. I know it's daft, but tea bags, mice, rats, false teeth and the mere thought of anything to do with chiropody will all set me off - not a pretty sight!

I understand the false teeth bit though and hate the adverts for "denture adhesive" that ITV etc will insist on broadcasting at meal times. They make me heave and I can't eat any more when I've seen one. Perhaps my new diet plan would be a tape full of such adverts to watch at meal times.

Don't understand why anybody buys teabags - inferior tea, higher cost. Tea leaves and pot swillings go into the bucket for the compost and are great for moisturising the day's shredded paper.
On the question of shredded paper - do any of you work in Marketing? If you do what do you do with the junk mail each day?
1. Bin it unopened
2. Open, quick scan, bin
3. Open, quick scan, shred anything that looks like it will rot, bin the rest
4. Open and study carefully
If any of the first three why do we get so much, if 4 must be something about working in Marketing.

I can speak only personally, but for me the convenience of tea bags outweighs the cost. I have large bone china mugs which hold all but a pint of liquid, so it's not as if I'm not getting the most out of one bag. The quality of the tea bags I use far and away exceeds much of the loose leaves I have tried. I use Twinings Everyday Blend teabags, and I'm VERY picky!

Tea bags are an invention of the modern world and almost as evil as the microwave ("the devil's spindryer"). "Today's hectic lifestyle" Just a ploy to get us to buy things "they" make to make themselves money.
Get out your teapot, make some real tea, and let's consign the teabag to history. And while we're at it let's give up instant coffee and all the bagged coffee machines that are flooding the market.

I don't use tea bags and don't even drink "normal" tea; I use a pinch of fruit infused black or green tea.

However, I have an endless supply from work where it's just impractical to use a tea pot and at least the tea bags go into the office compost bin and then end up in my compost at home.

I agree with the coffee argument; those pokey individual coffee helpings are more packaging than coffee and should be banned.

All this talk about tea reminds me of an article I read about an office that ran out of tea bags. The junior members whose job it was to make the tea were provided with the tea pot,loose tea and a tea strainer. Some time later the young people were discovered putting spoonfuls of loose tea into the strainer and then pouring boiling water through it into the cups! Makes some sort of sense I suppose.
