After last week's debacle by mice and rats, I bought some bait traps and 'Gold standard' poison from the Farmer's shop. Set them up in the tunnels and barns, determined to get them, wherever they decided to roam.
Spent yesterday re-sowing. Got up this morning to find much of the poison left for the mice has been taken, along with yet more broad beans, peas and chard. They 've also had a look at the beetroot, but didn't fancy them.
The rats have also eaten their bait, but stopped off for a snack of the chitting potatoes on their way home.
The badgers are back - they've dug up 4 beds of strawberries and generally had a bit of a party around the place.
AND - we've got a family of foxes down the field - just as I'm about to get my hens.
Who says living in the country is quiet? It's more like a war zone here!
When will the locusts arrive?

Our neighbour has\had rats under their shed and they were causing problems trying to get into our hen run. I was given the following tip. Put out Smash mash potato granules with the bait - they love the Smash and will go for that over veggie matter, but scoff the bait as well once attracted to the dish. The Smash granules swell up in their stomachs and stop them looking for anything else. Seems to have worked as seen none recently.

Hi Tigs
Sounds like you could use some of Mr Blair's WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction)at your site...
I do sypathise having suffered from an invasion of Badgers around sweetcorn time ...
we get a fair few mice and our regular local fox patrols, simply ooodles of pigeons...I know there are rats but as yet I haven't seen any

I am in my own little world, ...it's OK, ...they know me there!
I've had such a charmed life - keen wild cats, energetic dog, no sign of rabbits, mice or rats. Long struggle with badgers, but the electric fence seemed to have deterred them. Dog loves catching moles. Mink no longer present. Foxes in decline. Husband's a mean shot at pidgeons (or so he says - I think it may be the shock to them of his appearance at the bathroom window with gun and slippers and nothing else)!
What went wrong?
Just need a reappearance of polecats to complete the onslaught.

Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

Only in a figure of speech, you very young looking Tigger.

Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

Dear Tigger, I sympathise. We've got rats next door to our veg patch, mice, rabbits, squirrels, pheasants, pigeons and the occasional mountjack deer. We spend more time protecting out crops than anything else.
