Any cat providing for itself, hunting for food will take the easy (lowest energy cost) option available and the results tend not to get back to the kitchen lino. It's usually ground mammals (sadly not squirrels) which, it appears, no-one really cares whether it lives or dies. Its likely that such a diet will have lower volumes of waste matter. Interestingly its owner will know loads about cats. Fairy nuff?
Any well fed lounge moggy with nothing better to do will amuse itself between meals with any substitute wool-ball (eg blackbird etc) and will be keen to maintain the 'fun' well into the house. Its unlikely to eat much of it 'cos it would hate to spoil its appetite. It'd much rather save it for the 'dolphin friendly tuna and pasta bake with added vitamins and minerals essential for cats survival' that so attracts cat owners' attentions. It will then squeeze out the remainder of this michelin star meal on the nearest patch of someone elses territory. Its owner will know a great deal about cat's names and talk to it in a silly voice.
Perhaps this accounts for the 'difference of opinion' regarding the cat's 'raison d'etre'.
Having committed the above to text it strikes me that there are startling parallels with humankind!!!

My cats are certainly not well fed so you might assume they would be more predatory bird hunters, but they are not. We don't have a vermin problem or any rabbits invading my veg garden, so one assumes they take up their time and inclination.
That suits us fine.
Never seen a squirrel attack our bird feeders or any of our crops.

I have to net all sowing areas against cats as they use them as toilets. I wish they would do something useful like catching grey squirrels.
