I am intending to create an Asparagus bed and will plant it in the Spring, does anybody grow Asparagus and if so what variety would you recommend for the UK, I prefer to eat the Green types as they have more flavour in my opinion but have heard that the French say that the White varieties have a better taste, does anybody know if this is the case, thanks Steve.

I posted a similar question regarding asparagus as I currently have a bed of Gijnlim variety at home which does really well and I was thinking of moving this to my allotment. After a lot of very good advice from the regulars I've now decided to try Mary Washington from seed on my allotment (100 seeds £1.00 from Tuckers!!). I've potentially a lot more room down there so compared to the price of crowns I thought I'd give it a go! I can't advise you about green or white varieties I'm afraid, other than to say once you've tasted your own you'll never want to buy it from a shop again!!

I too have Ginjlim and also conovers collosal, both of which are excellent.
As for the white varieties, I thought they were just blanched or am I totally wrong.

I planted 30 or so crowns of THIELIM F1 2 years ago and i nabbed a few this year and expect to get a full cropping season next year, cant wait. I bought mine from Trevor Sore he does advertise in the back of KG. As for a white variety i havent yet seen one advertised so i cannot advise on it.

There are the F1 varieties all male but I have had super results over the years from Convers Colossal,
Mary Washington and Martha Washington. The three were all grown from seed and and as June says the seeds are not exactly a fortune and the results not much different from the F1 varieties.
I have not seen Martha Washington seed advertised for some time now but I am sure they will be available somewhere. Asparagus is very easy to grow from seed and I feel that planting out when the plants are one year old is an advantage.
