i went to my first pottery class last night (well the first in 10 years!)
the age range of pupils was rather exciting! the youngest was 28 the eldest was at least 75
i had a whale of a time for a fiver an hour!
i am making a large fat bird for my garden, another person is making all her xmas presents!, another boots for plants, the list is endless
what was nicer i didn't have to focus on work or home for a whole 2.5 hrs!
it's part of my 'get a life' focus!!
so i just wanted to say if you fancy something new have a go!
you're never too old!

There is till too much ageism around. I can think of two people much the same age, one has been forced by circomstances to give up most gardening after a lifetime of experience, the other took retirement as a new frontier and is contantly finding new interest in growing vegetables and solving the many problems as they come along.
Years ago I took over part of a garden of somebody whose obsession was to simplify the tasks necessary to maintain his garden such that neighbours did not complain. in the end he just sat in a chair doing nothing. The inactivity killed him.

I love mixing with different ages, from babies to octoganerians and beyond. Some of my friends are my mums friends aged over 70. I value their advice and wisdom and can talk to them about anything and everything.
I think it's great when people find new experiences to explore. Life's a beautiful tapestry

Dear Jopsy, so glad you enjoyed your pottery class, made me laugh when i saw what you were making.
My life is that full of interesting things, pottery will have to wait this week.
Dear Allan those stories remind me of my old next door neighbour who died four years ago at the age of ninety eight. It was only the last couple of years that he couldn't get out and do his garden and allotment, he used to get so frustrated.
I remember in the last year of his life, i spent a whole weekend working in his garden, and by the end of the second day it did look really quite nice.
Next day when his home help came she said how nice his garden looked. All he said was, it wouldn't be in this bloody mess if i could get there.
For quite a while i felt really hurt, but after a while i realized it was just frustation talking.
I still miss him.
So everyone make every day count.
Kind regards Old Herbaceous.

hi jopsy, tried pottery myself last year.for some reason i pictured meself sitting at the wheel and throwing some type of greek urn, with a patrick s straddled behind me
the reality was a very mixed bunch of older people and no wheel.we consentrated on long sausage clay that we had to make into a pot (a bit like being at school)mine turned out like some modern form of art that vered to the left and then the right, infact it looked like it had had too much to drink.to tell you the truth it was crap, and i never went back to pick it up after it had been fired
although i did go back this sep to enrol on an art course,as its the only thing im good at,but ended up on a cake decorating course
so if you want a burf day cake,im your man

I'm probably going to regret saying this but here goes....
i used to go to belly dancing classes.
Not only were a lot of the ladies there well passed the first flush of youth, but the instructor was well into her 70's and a bl@@dy amazing inspiration. So full of energy and enthusiasm and always laughing. she put us "younger" ones to shame.
Good luck with the pottery, Jopsy. Keep us uptodate with progress

Princess Zena, what a dark horse you are, any other little secrets you would like to share with us all.
They had a troop of belly dancers at the Woburn oyster festival, and very good they were as well, and as with your class there was a huge age difference between them.
You never cease to amaze me Zena.
Kind regards Old Herbaceous.
