I have just spent the weekend at an aromatherapy conference, held at Warwick university. On the walk across the campus to have breakfast, I passed a pile of pallettes. First thought- could I get them in my car? Second thought- would anyone see me? Third thought- would they mind if they did? Fourth thought- for god sake stop hunting for stuff for the allotment everytime you go out, you mad obsessed woman :!:
Anyone else got this problem?
Seedling
p.s I`m still wondering if they would have fitted in my car.

You KNOW I have!

I spent yesterday bumming polystyrene boxes off a man on the market. I now have 5 in my clutches and the promise of a load more next week so for pities sakes don't go to the Tesco fish counter on the scrouge. These only contained broccoli and smell great.

I was right about where you were this weekend then; Ron and Rodney were after you... 8)

Yes, my husband disowns me when I decide I need a few more 5 litre plastic mineral water bottles to convert to individual cloches, and I go ferreting in the local plastic recycling bin. (Especially as I once fell into it and had to wait for somebody to come along and pull me out, dressed in my gubby old gardening clothes and wellies !)

The time to start worrying Seedling, is when you start chucking other people out of the car so that you can get stuff that you've found in.

Have you been doing that too Chantal?

Naughty naughty

It's a bugger trying to get the large pallets into a punto, even with the seats down. They're too wide to fit the boot. The small ones aren't worth getting, only for firewood for the bonfire.

Think I need to get a new car with more boot space

I'm chuffed to be able to say that I can get four large pallets in the back of my trust Mazda which is very handy when I'm passing a loaded skip.

Am curious about the desire to scoop up pallets. Perhaps you can all let me into your secret as to what you use them for? Making compost bins?
I current have two wire cages which serve for this purpose, but after 25 years use they're getting past their used-by date.
Can sombody perhaps direct me to a website where I can find out how to build some compost bins out of pallets. Or do you use them for some other purpose? Thanks

Hi Pimrose,
I`m collecting pallets to break up and use the lengths of wood to edge beds. My back is a bit of a wreck so I think the no dig method might be the way for me to go next year. Hoping husband will start constructing them soon so I can start filling a few with overwintering veg. Lots of people do use them to make compost heaps because the air gets in through the gaps between the slats and speeds up the whole process. They are also free - a big bonus :D

Yes, pallets will be making compost bins for me, but are also useful for small raised beds and the left overs burn well come the autumn bonfire season. :D

Jerry will no doubt have some instructions for you on bin manufacture; he's the master of the DIY!

We get free pallets from a local wood firm that receive MDF loads on large ones. Luckily they are made from 8' by 4' lengths of wood! So far OH has constructed me a dual compost bin (see below, lovingly painted by kids! This photo was taken before we tided up, honest!) and I'm after a load for raised beds too......

Do I spy a couple of 'ponds' nestling there?

Nice demonstration picture Deb (and what a nice background view for your garden too !)

Will show this to my husband, although what he'll say to having yet another "To do" item added to his maintenance action list I don't know !
