I've overwintered Red Baron onions for the last couple of years from sets and fancy something different but still red. Any suggestions for an exposed northern hillside ? We prefer red onions fyi.
For the greenhouse I want to get some cut and come again lettuce and rocket going to keep something coming from the garden in winter (in growbags), there are many types about, what have you grown ?
On a different note, just had an extension built and the builders left some Kingspan foil covered insulation sheets behind. It is thick, rigid and I reckon it would be great to make an insulated hot box inside the greenhouse covered in perspex. I'll let you know how I go on.

What about growing red onions from seed you get much more choice? They need sowing from now until the New Year and may be tiny when planted out but soon catch up and often overtake the sets.

Hi Chantal,
I am in total agreement with your posting. I gave up sets years ago as a waste of time. Too many go to seed yet with home sown you very rarely get a 'runner.' As you so quite rightly say the choice of onion seed is enormous and I am sure MRJ you will have much more chance of finding a Red Onion to your liking than by planting sets.

.
Thanks for the replies, I'll take a look at onions from seeds. What red variety are you in favour of ?

The Stone Age did not end for lack of stone, and the Oil Age will end long before the world runs out of oil.
