Hedgehogs.

Do you know i haven't seen one hedgehog yet this year, not even a road kill.
I know theres a few about because of there droppings.
I reckon they must wait until they see my bedroom light go off then appear.
Has anyone else noted a lack of hedgehogs this year, or are they just coming out a bit later at night.

We've had them wandering about during the day much to the consternation of ours and the neighbours dogs. What is it about dogs and hedgehogs? We've had an adult and a young one scavaging about where we feed the birds. Plenty of droppings (or skid marks more like) on the grass. Despite that I must admit probably less road kill than usual.

There's at least one out this way - comes across our front garden about 11.30 every night, into next door's back garden, then under the fence into ours. then he disappears into the night....
don't know what hedgehog poo looks like ...

perhaps someone should start another thread identifying wildlife from their poo??

We've at least one fully grown hedgehog about in our garden, which visits most nights about dusk and eats what's left in the cats' dish. We are also putting out water for it (them) and from the scuff marks on the dish it visits the water dish.
Hedgehog poo is black, narrow and about an inch and a half long.

I once had a dog who was very possessive with his toys and would keep these in his bed to stop the other dogs playing with them. One day I saw him carrying in 4 brown balls from the garden and then guarded them. Knowing that we did not have brown balls, I went to investigate and found 4 baby hedgehogs, very much alive and curled up for protection. I put them into the side garden (the dogs could not get there) and hoped mother hedgehog would find them.

All of them in Norfolk.
All of them today.
All of them squashed.

My friend said shes got some in her garden, shes recently acqiured a caravan so i could do a bill oddie and sit up all night to watch from the comfort of the van!

My friend who lives nearby has seen a baby one frequently in her garden, so I guess there is a family in the area. She is very pleased to have this particular little visitor, as long as her bully-boy cats don't chase it away.

seen plenty of hedgehogs in cornwall during the past fortnight they were raiding our bin inside the tent at night

Last week spotted the first hedgehog in our garden that we've seen for several years. Have put out lots of meaty catfood to try and encourage it to become a regular, but all the foxes seem to have arrived first and gobbled it up.

We had a springer spaniel who loved hedgehogs. She would collect them up and put them in the back of the car, then sit with them. Until we got wise to her antics, we would arrive at our destination and find we had transported a number of hedgehogs as well as the dog.
