I have been offered some artichoke off shoots by a friend so long as I help myself. Does anyone know what the right time of year to do this. And how big should the offshoots be?

Lucky you! You could probably still get away with it now! Best time is Spring - April/May-ish - you stand a chance of a globe or two. But I am still sowing seed and will plant out chokelets next month. So long as they have a good start to build roots for overwintering (cover them with straw as they are tender).
Some good instructions at http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/joomla/ ... ic,18295.0

Thank you for that, I know where I'll be heading tomorrow with a sharp knife...after the big dig that is.
