I was taking a bit of advice from Submariner today, had an hour laying down in the shade of the oak tree over the allotment today. I was watching the swallows darting about catching flies, when i noticed the planes flying over at a fair few thousand feet up.
What i couldn't understand was why some of the planes had vapour trails and some hadn't, they looked the same height and seemed to be travelling at about the same speed.
I know the ones without vapour trails can't have electric motors, because they can't have exstension
leads that long, do they :?:
If anybody knows the answer could you let us know. :wink:

I always thought, rightly or wrongly, it was the planes that flew in the higher stratusphere that produced trails ....although they may look similar heights from down here I would say there is a signicant difference once you get up there

Anyway you are thinking too deeply :wink:

I think Weed is right,it's when they get up to the really cold stuff and moisture from the engines forms ice crystals which is ,I believe,what we see. Unless someone was pulling my leg many years ago.......

What ever causes them there are far to many of them. I would put an internationally enforced 100% duty on aviation fuel and use the revenue to fund the United Nations. Most flights are unnecessary.

Always at least 8 or 9 vapour trails in the sky high above here heading East/West..over the top I assume, Stateside/Europe...sometimes including C5 Galaxy transports...which have a very characteristic whine to their engine note..

Somewhat lower...The 1942 Stearman biplane (G-AROY) that I was watching performing yesterday was good to see....

....Auster (G-ALFA) and 2 Spitfires (MK356 & MJ627)last weekend :D

Skylarks too...birdy type...not C175 :wink:
