The builders haven't been around for a bit as waiting for the doors & windows to come as 1st delivery was wrong size. Today the doors came but builders on other jobs until Tuesday, so took advantage & tidied up all their bits & bobs & cut offs that were in the way. I'm pretty sure it will be OK as just the screed to go down & then the electricians etc are cladding it out so they won't need the bits. I didn't toss them just got them out of the way so got to weed the back area - 1/2 filled the garden waste bin. One less chore to do though when they finish, but front is still full of builders bags etc.
Tomorrow is also weed day but on the plot. I do have a question for you though as when searching the pockets of my jeans I found the seed packet for the fennel I did the re-sows for but it's not Florence fennel just normal fennel & now wondering if maybe the first sows were these as well. Just checked & normal fennel are perennials which I don't want, I want bulb. I will have to ditch the lot to be sure but have I time to do this & re-sow to get a crop? It seems quite a time since I sowed the first ones, but hoping you'll say yes re-sow as at least the weather is warm.

Still plenty of time to sow the bulb fennel, as it grows really quickly when the soil is warm.

Well, at last it has started to rain here, a welcome relief. Yesterday I had to take my dog to the Vet at Minehead for some teeth cleaning, he now has a Colgate smile. Whilst he was under the anaesthetic I visited Minehead Railway Station and just missed seeing the steam train leave but admired the locomotives in the station.

Almost summer solstice, where has the year gone? The garden is not even vaguely tamed but I have made a start on the ground elder and cleaned the pond out, what a messy chore that was.
Spend a couple of days taking an old wooden greenhouse down that one of our neighbours was getting rid off. A wee sand and paint and a couple of rotten bits of wood to be replaced and then it will hopefully go back together nicely. Was lovely as they were only 3 gardens up and we have back gates onto the field behind us so no wandering up and down the street with panes of glass.
All raised beds are netted, partly due to the amount of pigeons here and also our chickens keep digging everything up. I’m on my 4th lot of rhubarb and couldn’t believe it when I went out and found it sitting on top of the soil… it had been growing wonderfully. chickens now locked away when I’m at work and out in the evening when I can keep an eye out.
I apologise to the ehedgehogs whose names were being taken in vain as I initially thought they’d dug it up overnight.

Well, whatever the crop is in the back field...current thoughts leaning towards it being Rye or Spelt..some new irrigation equipment is being set up. It must be a very high value crop...with all that ridging work and now a load more new kit and pump running.

Had a really productive day today - planted out 5 caulis, including 3 of the romanesco type which I’ve not tried before, and 2 All year round, cabbages, calabrese, all went in the brassica cage.
And lots of lettuces, in whatever spaces I could find in the rest of the growing space in the garden, so I’m now officially cream crackered! Tomorrow, it’ll be more lettuces, some parsley plants, and a couple of chard. That’s after doing the weekly food shopping as it’s my turn this week.

Cracking on with the jobs but quite a few folk wanting a chat so didn't get done as much as I hoped. Mind only 2 1/2 beds left to weed so better than before & I did clear, feed & top up the raised bed at the back & popped some onions in there that have been sitting & waiting on the staging. Found my first strawberries, just 4 but the others won't be long. Unfortunately I didn't get to taste them, stolen by the dog who just played around chasing them! Grrr!
I got more confused with the Fennel, so just let it be. When I went through the seed box quite a few just said Fennel, not Florence Fennel on the pack but the pic was of bulbs so think I'm OK.

You've got to pot a pepper or two, or more accurately plant in rings. I think I read somewhere they do better with warm roots so I've been growing them in black rings for a few years now.
Meanwhile on the other side of the polytunnel the mangetout Deliket are going mad.

Continuing with the jobs but somewhat slower today, too much chatting mainly but was glad of the break from weeding the asparagus beds. No wonder the new guys are slow up, another area of rock hard soil that had to be smashed through; while avoiding any baby spears, although there were a few casualties. Only got a small area to sort in these 2 older beds as the other newer bed is fine for a quick pull up of the weeds.
Still got the bed that floods to do with the water cress in it & that is really rock hard! Not looking forward to it as although the channel around the edges with stones in to assist the draining worked OK, but the stones have migrated all over the bed. I expect there will be some cussing in the mix. My plan is to collect the rocks up & when I'm more caught up with chores will set up the drain again but with some mesh down first. You never know, the year could end up soggy again & it does work to an extent.

Finally got some Runner beans and Tenderstem broccoli, planted out…..had to water the ground an hour before planting, just so the soil held together, it is that dry!
Going to plant some statice plants out, a little later…..still not showing any rain until the end of next week….the grass fields are all looking parched!

I've just put a few sweetcorn plants into the back garden, I filled the planting holes with water and let it drain away, then pushed the plants down onto the wet and covered back with dry soil over the top. Also set up a few more canes for a second wigwam of beans, that I wasn't going to plant, this time Moonlight.
Two irrigation drums operating in far back field. Bit of a grey day at the moment. We had some drizzle yesterday morning out of the grey but then sun broke through and it was warm, out of the breeze. An extremely busy day at the big garden, with some parched well walked lawns now..
