We didn't make our target of October 1st before turning the heating on briefly. House temperature was 17 degrees this morning so heating was switched on briefly. Now the curtains are wide open in our sun facing rooms to make the most of whatever gentle warmth that might provide.

Can anybody share any useful hints for capturing whatever heat is available?. My dear old dad lost most of his hair in his old age and used to swear that sleeping in a woollen hat in winter always ensured a better night's sleep when the thermometer started to drop.

Primrose. My late father also swore that wearing a woollen top at night helped him to have a good night's sleep.

Well I guess in medieval times when housing and heating ere all very primitive, a lot of very bulky garments were worn by everybody indoors. I'm great fan of woollen fingerless gloves when typing and reading on chilly winter days.

I did an offshore survival course to go out and work on North Sea oil rigs in the early 1980's, we were told the 2 places where you lose the most heat in the cold are the top of your head and your legs, something to do with greater surface area of skin exposed to the cold, so a hat and long johns are the answer if you haven't got a survival suit............................ 8)

I know nothing, bit suspect either a problem with the live site or some testing by the IT team.

I've emailed the editor and the IT lead, but they might not be picking up work emails on the weekends.

Have I missed something or an announcement that our forum format was abiut to change.
I,ve just logged on and found myself faced with a completely new blue and white format which I found very disconcerting.

I can only repeat what i overheard an elderly lady say in a greengrocer's s shop just before the decimalisation of currency was introduced:
" why don,t they wait until all the old people have died off before they introduce all these unwelcome changes?"
