I know you're not supposed to compost cooked food as it may attract vermin, but what about vegetables that have only been blanched for a minute or so, such as my broad bean skins?
Also, eggshells, surely uncooked ones would attract rats as much as cooked ones wouldn't they?

Hello Jude
Time for you to get a few hens, I think. They love kitchen scraps of all sorts and turn them into beautiful tasty fresh eggs! They will also give you good stuff for your compost heap! They're no trouble and even take themselves off to bed in the evening as the light fails!

Thanks all. I do know not to put meat waste etc. on the heap and I always crush eggshells (I've been composting for years) It was just a thought about whether it made any difference if eggshells were cooked or raw as far as attracting unwelcome creatures and I did wonder if cooked veg.(without fat, sauce etc.)would compost properly.

Hi Jude,
With Egg Shells I always bake them before they go on the compost. When I am doing the Sunday roast I pop them in a roasting tin and bung them in the bottom of the oven. They become brittle and then break up very easily and distribution is so easy you can then spread them equally over the compost. There is then nothing there to attract Vermin.
