Don't poke your eyes out

A cane just missed my eye when I was bending down today. The flower pot that was on it had blown off. I stuck a bright red clothes peg on the top to replace it so now the cane is much more visible.

Not so sure a clothes peg is any better than the cane. Why not invest in a few cane caps (cheap to buy) or save your empty vitamin pots with a little bit of blue tack inside to hold secure.
Your eyesight is very valuable. Don't take risks.

Cane caps are relatively cheap. They are normally green, the last colour I would choose for maximum visibility either on the cane or the ground but I stocked up at Malvern with £2-worth of many colours and I was allowed to choose the brightest colours., completely forgetting that I got some before.
The other annoying one is green wire, have you ever tried to find the bit you dropped in the grass before it wrapped around your machine?

I have only seen yellow ones - common sense not to use green I would think.

ive worn glasses since i was 5, every time now the optician trys to push contact lenses but i actually think they are a step backwards from the safty point of view.

I think the idea behind cane caps is to protect your eye(s) should your face encounter a cane. That's why most of them are green or brown, so they blend in. I think the brightly coloured ones have been introduced for their 'preventative' properties, to draw your attention to the canes and thus avoid any encounter with them. Same item - different purpose.

I recently heard a horrific story from someone I work with of a young father who fell whilst holding his newborn. The baby was alright but the father was horribly and fatally injured by his ackward fall onto the cane. (Details too unpleasant to warrant mentioning). Ever since hearing this, I have covered all my canes with plastic bottles, tennis balls, and anything else I can find. Better safe than sorry and it's little trouble.

Try childrens ball pool balls, I belive you can get them in bags of a hundred from Asda, not sure of the price and they are multi coloured.
