I'll fit right in then. My trouble is that forum scrolling can become addictive. Hubby starts taking the mickey totally discounting the fact that his nose is glued to the desktop all day. Goose and gander phrase comes to mind!

Welcome Jenny! You're not far from me..... Salisbury is such a lovely city.

I have a strange memory of Salisbury: about 45 years ago, I spent 10 days in a very cold January at the Cold Research Centre outside the city and, on the evening before being put into isolation, I was slowly and quietly walking round the cathedral cloisters at dusk, when I heard a key being turned in a door and realised I had been locked out in the cold. I ran to the door, shouted and, luckily, was heard and released. Phew. Otherwise, I might not have survived to tell the tale and be a nuisance on this forum.

You'd have been haunting the cloisters to this day! Harvard Hospital, the site of the research centre, is long gone I'm afraid, but the cathedral cloisters have survived and are still well worth a visit. Funny, being a resident, I haven't been for years, anymore than I've visited Stonehenge. I'm nearer the Porton Down establishment than Salisbury.

When I was in the RAF in the early 50s we were asked to volunteer to go to Porton Down to help with experiments in "treating the common cold". I'm glad I didn't go - it was later revealed they were actually testing nerve gas!

The Cold Research Centre was actually a great holiday. They paid your train fare, all accommodation and food provided for 10 days, including an alcoholic drink of your choice. I was taking rather important examinations, so I left my OH to look after our large tribe of children and went to Salisbury with a huge case of books (no internet or Kindle then!). I never got a cold or flu or whatever they were testing at the time. And I passed the exams.

Hello Jenny, welcome.

I overcame clay-like subsoil heavy with stones by creating raised beds, finding topsoil to fill them isn't easy or expensive so either way you have a lot of work ahead. I live in the bowl of an ancient volcano part of which had been farmed, then the ground was disturbed and the shallow topsoil robbed. I had machines redistribute what little topsoil was left just to grow grasses, at the very best it's just a spade depth with very little drainage. I'm slowly learning to deal with it after 16 years and the biggest mistakes were trying to rush things without learning what works and what won't work.

Actually the Church clock is playing about at the moment. One of the pulleys has about worn out on the strike, so it is striking one to many dongs, on the hour....i hope no one is setting their watch by it.

OK, it isn't April yet but maybe OH could arrange for the extra bong during April!
