Hi Robo!

They insert many devices now, just the simple pacemaker to the actual defibrillator to shock a heart back into the right rhythm - mind right at the early stages so you don't fall down in a big heap, & only a minor charge! Mr Westi always tells me I'm too graphic! He had a quadruple bypass August before last.

What I am saying is trust them, do what they suggest, go for it! It will change your life for the better!

Back to the plot,

Just looking out of window and the rising sun has a wonderful light to it.
No snow overnight, my =Michael Fish moment did not materialise.

Temperature throughout today is predicted as being Min 2 to Max 5 degrees
I suspect the wind will remain chilly.

So much for the bright sunrise, the beautiful light has disappeared in the minutes I have been typing this.

Aiming to wrap up extra warm today and al least get some tidying up done at plot if I can.

Log Date fourteen one twenty seventeen

Wrapped up well warm and ventured out of home craft to plot.
Although it would have been possible to dig the raised beds the surface of each was a little too cold to turnover and dig in deeper, so left that.

Did dig up the remaining 12 Musselburgh Leeks, 8 of which were rotting in middle and had some signs of miner so they have gone in a bag for transporting away from plot.
Still have some Northern Lights leeks to come out. Not many.

Did pick some more Montgomery Brussel sprouts, few left to come if they put on anymore growth, currently small buttons.

Measured maximum area I would want to devote to potatoes this year, will probably only be 4 varieties, Jazzy, Lady Christl, Winston & Sarpo Mira.
Soon be time to go visit the nursery and select each individual seed potato.

Temperature was +5 by 11:30am and then the rain started, damn chill rain it was as well. Depart time
Then this afternoon it brightened up again but I had removed all the extra wrapping and was too settled back in home craft.

Spent the morning on the allotment, tidying up all the brassicas by removing any yellow leaves and digging up leeks (mostly usable but some, like Pa Snip's, had gone soft). Still a few Musselburgh left.

The ground is still covered with snow and there were lots of pheasant tracks, especially around the sunflower stalks which we collected and tied up against the compost heap, but no rabbit tracks!

Minus 5 just before 8am. The Enterprise flightpath this morning will take myself and two passengers to the nursery from whence I purchase seed potatoes.
In the rotational scheme this years potato bed is smaller than previous years.
Will only be growing 92 plants of 5 varieties this year.

Log Sunday twenty two zero one twenty seventeen

This years seed potatoes all set up for chitting.
Jazzy, Lady Christl, Winston, King Edward, Sarpo Mira

Fun part will be deciding where to plant, purchased twice as many King Edward and Winston than originally planned for.

Found a box of red onions from last years harvest, some still edible >>>>>>>>>> Bonus

It was too wet underfoot to do any gardening today, so checked on the stores from last year: shallots Jermor and garlic Vallelado are nearly used up but we have not yet touched shallots Yellow Moon and garlic Provence Wight and they are all still sound and solid so, hopefully, they'll remain so until some of the overwintering bulbs (onion Electric, garlic Solent Wight
and Provence Wight, shallot Jermor) are fit to use in early summer.

Shallot Golden Gourmet and garlic Picardy Wight will be planted in spring. I don't grow summer onions because they grow too big for our purposes.

Enterprise log 24/1/17

One earth year ago I had made 6 batches of the new years Seville Orange Marmalade by now, this year so far I have made none. Shops will be sold out of the oranges soon If I don't pull my finger out.

Just as well that for some obscure reason I made more than normal last year and still have a dozen jars in stock. I am the only one who eats it :D

I'm not keen on Orange marmalade, have you ever made Lime and if so could it be made sugar free using Stevia instead?

Never found limes at a price sensible enough to consider making a viable batch. Would like to give it a go though

The recipe I used today was 1kg Seville Orange to 2kg sugar, I thought about cutting it back but I'm glad I didn't.
Not sure about a sugar substitute, both jam and preserving sugar have amounts of pectin added.
I guess you could use packet pectin, but how much ???

Another batch to make tomorrow. Already selected a jar for local show entry in Sept.

If the show isn't until September PaSnip, that should give you plenty of time to soak the Chivers label of the chosen jar...i'm not suggesting anything.... :)
