A good friend is moving away in a few weeks. :(
They've already got an allotment up and going in the new area but are fairly new to bulk veggie growing. Any ideas for a good going away present - about £20?

Richard that's a much better idea
Saying that I love a thoughtful present, maybe it's more of a female thing? :?

A trug, for collecting their first harvests? The D.G. Hessayon book, if they don't already have it? Or a good book on freezing and preserving?

Dear Jenny, i have been thinking about this little problem for you, and think i have come up with the ideal present. A hose pipe, they might need one as it has been so dry the last few days.
I'm sure you will get a more sensible answer than that though.

Kind regards Old Herbaceous.

We will always get some sort of weather.

OH I think a better present would be the water that goes in it.
I'm heading for the apple tree or the trug at the moment (a trug is of those frivolous things I would never buy myself but would love that romantic appeal of wandering through the garden cutting flowers to put in there!).

Make the apple tree an espalier and add a book that explains how to train it.

Doubles up as a hedge or windbreak. :D
Do not put off thanking people when they have helped you, as they may not be there to thank later.

Oh I just keep thinking about this one - probably because I simply love buying presents for people!

How about a gardeners' basket, incorporating some of the above ideas? You could buy a seed tray (as the 'basket') and fill it with - a gardening voucher, packet or two of seeds, biscuits/tea bags for allotment breaks (or a couple of mugs), plant labels & a pen, pricking out set, etc. A good guide would be the things you have found useful. Then wrap it all in clear cellophane and tie it up with stands of natural raffia.

The apple tree idea sounds lovely too.
