Council Wheelie bins - Recycling metal

A friend says I should only be putting in food, drink and pet food tins and no other metal in my Wheelie Bin. She said I could be fined if I put in any other metal ! Is this right ? I have been putting in loads of scrap metal believing I was helping. This doesn't make sense to me.

my mum and dad put milk cartons in and we cannot!

I think your friend might be right. In this area the collected tins are crushed periodically by the lorry as it does the round and your lumps of scrap iron would certainly mess up the works inside.

The only way of finding an authoritative answer to this question is to ask your local coucil or the contractor it employs to handle the waste and recycling collections.

What is permissible varies according to the contracts each council has signed. Here we put cans of all sorts in the general waste because it is incinerated. The metals are separated from the other cinders and they are sent for recycling at that stage.

I think this one is a combination of common sense and social responsibility, on both sides.
Our's to put in only what we should.
The council to draw up the list properly and collect often enough.

Arguing the list(s) could be never-ending, the collection should be weekly though, unless we are allowed enough water to wash the biodegradable stuff off the tin and plastic.

The test case is in court this week, Mrs Challice, who put all her rubbish in one recycling bin, contaminating a dustcart load, estimated by her council as 300 bins worth.

Our recycling bins are hand sorted into the collection lorry and if there's anything there that shouldn't be then we get it back. We have paper/card, bottles, cans and garden waste collected from the house.

we still don't have recycling collection - or wheelie bins despite living in a high density terraced housing area with lots of households in multiple occupation and/or families. Some of us trek to the bring site (usually full to overflowing), most of us just dump it all into black bin liners and out into the alley once a week. Verging on the criminal I'd say!

Illegal, both of your council not to have doorstep collections and of the fly-tippers .

We have paper collected four weekly ( ), ditto garden waste (though not of course ours), tins as I have said can go in our general rubbish because they are extracted from the incinerator ash. Plastics, foil, fabrics and glass go down to the bins at the co-op, so we keep them in one of our shopping bags and take it whenever it's getting full or we have a big shop to do. That way the recycling doesn't get out of control (as has happened ) and I can carry it when I walk down .

Ceredigion say that they have a great recycling service. They used to issue green bags,black bags and clear bags for recyclables9except glass). They now only issue clear bags and you have to supply your own black and buy the green. The lorry then comes around, all the bags are thrown in and then crushed together. I do wonder if it is then separated at the yard.
They now have the temerity to not pick up any bag that they think contains the wrong waste.

eek, horrified to think anyone would think we or our neighbours were fly tipping

the council collects our rubbish (in black bin liners) from the back alley once a week, as they have done for decades. They just don't collect recyclables from our part of town so useful stuff gets thrown out with the rubbish unless someone can be bothered to take it to the bring site (we do I hasten to add)
