We don't get many j.w around st. Helens but we get them every year in Spain they walk up the track which is around a mile long up hill all the way as we are half way up a mountain then after our place there are 5 others all with long rough access tracks but they still come and post their leaflets which are kept till November as they are handy for starting a fire in the log burner

Who was Leviticus ?

Does this mean I need to start reading a bible again ?

We also don't get door knockers other than JW, we made a friend of one lady JW who visits us regularly but as a friend. Mostly this keeps us out of bounds to the other evangelists though we do occasionally get poachers from other Kingdom Halls. Other than that every three years we get the candidates for local elections, each elected candidate has so far proved very poor when it comes to community issues which I'm sure has to be their main purpose.

I stopped the telephone sales intrusion with a call blocker so we mostly have "Peace on earth".

Richard. You are ,lucky you see an election candidate every fhree years. We've lived here for donkey's years and I can't rwcall fhe last time we ever had an election csndidate come knocking. I suppose with our MP enjoying a 25'000 majority candidates from other parties thnk it barely worth putting themselves forward. We did have some excitement many years ago when some Independents took on our Parish council and won a few seats. They were good people too but sadly they served one term and then faded from the scene due to other commitments.

For many years I didn't vote out of respect for the local community who presumably knew more about the candidates for local government positions, then we had a candidate I did know and made assumptions that a neighbouring farmer becoming a local councillor would be keen to care for his community.

What we got was a complete Walter Mitty character who when given the opportunity to deal with local issues in his locality would respond by promoting his self importance and explaining he had more important issues to deal with.

So, I helped vote-in a bloody clown of a man who didn't help when we needed it and who may not have gained his position if I hadn't voted for him. I think this is a good reason for not voting in any election, if you have no knowledge, or scant knowledge of the persons presenting themselves other than their CV leaflets then you're likely to end up with a self appointed ego fragile twerp or just a hopeless representative when you need one.

The dangerous world of discussing politics, Hmmmmm.

How many people actually 'know' their candidates, I'd venture hardly any.
Take the suggestion of not voting to its extreme and we would possibly get to a point where the turn out for elections was so poor they might cease to exist.

Democracy then goes out the window and leaves the door wide open for the extremist autocratic.

Like I said, dangerous subject this

The danger when people start to believe their own publicity is that they often fall off their own ego.

Pa Snip. I tend to agree with you, with one proviso. Should be an extra box on the voting slip that says. None of the above.

hi Shallot Man

See where you are coming from on that one, however I am in danger of getting pulled into what I have already suggested is a dangerous area of discussion :D

Yes, short of someone to vote for is quite different to being irresponsible and not voting.

Just like a dinner party conversation - if you're a "Gentleman" of course, and go to such affairs, rather than having an ordinary supper with your mates!

When I phoned my 70 year old friend one morning last week she whispered into the phone that she was lying on the floor. She had just done a commando crawl from the kitchen to answer the phone as there were Jehovas Witnesses at the door and she didn't want them to see her!!!

That's quite funny, but also rather awful that one should be reduced to such tactics in your own home to avoid unsolicited callers.

We have a lamp post outside our house with a Council "No Doorstep Selling Zone" poster fixed to it, so I just point it out to any unwanted callers saying "This applies to any kind of selling, whether it's dusters or religion". They then retreat back down the drive, have a conflab and disappear round the corner out of sight of the lamp post to probably resume their efforts elsewhere.

It's what keeps me coming back together with the garden help, good vocabulary and spelling, no text speak, talk about almost anything, learn about almost anything, encouragement when things go fuzzy and etc-etc.

We didn't do coffee yet, any coffee nerds on this forum ?
