I have in the past read about an international species of annual, Primusiocus Aprillis, which blossoms in many countries around the world at the same time and some people have had great success with in the UK.
They have a short season but can be elaborate and colourful although taste is said to be variable and sometimes difficult to swallow.
Can be grown from small gemlike seed, many successful examples have been as a result of hard graft on corn although conditions apparently have to be just right to be successful.
Does anyone have any experience or maybe even know of a reputable UK source

Breaking the Latin Primusiocus Aprillis down to a rough translation may give the clue
Primus:- First
Iocus:- Joke
Aprillis:- April
