Just paid the vehicle tax for my car, does anybody else feel 'cheated' that we no longer get, or have to display, a tax disc.

I think its another government cut back which will ultimately fail to save money. The claim being that the ANPR cameras will pick up offenders who fail to pay.

Except I have read that it is an admitted fact that currently ANPR cameras cannot read or react to number plates which are illegally spaced, how many of those do you spot on a almost daily basis, except when the vehicle triggers a speed camera and a picture is taken. Then the registration can be manually read.

Also the old tax disc used to inform us of which 'class' a vehicle was taxed in. For instance a car being used as a taxi would be 'Hackney Carriage' not 'PLG'
Classic vehicles of a certain age may be taxed in the 'Historic' class and as such pay zero vehicle tax, except classic buses or coaches which are still used for hire & reward private hire in which case they still have to pay the full amount for its taxation class.

Now it will not be possible for us to immediately see if the vehicle we are about to travel in is legally taxed.

Somehow it just doesn't feel right.

An interesting point Pa Snip, is there a crime of being carried in an untaxed vehicle? There is for being in a stolen one, even unknowingly. If we can't see if it's taxed how do we as members of the public know that there's insurance or MOT, both of which are safety considerations. Government seem to have looked at this from just the police point of view.

Next time someone says 'do you want a lift' you may have to think twice.

I thought it was odd that tax discs are no longer shown.

I have long advocated that the uk government should make insurance companies issue a disc for display. This wouldn't cost the national purse anything and will lower the number of drivers without insurance.

Here three discs have to be displayed on the windscreen. Tax, Insurance and MOT (where applicable).

Funny you should ask that Pa Snip....I posted on my Facebook page, wondering if I was daft to feel I was missing out by not having a tax disc. Got lots of comments saying I wasn't daft at all and that they were keeping their old ones too.

I also re taxed my car in December and my plastic disc tax holder on my windscreen looks alarmingly bare. I think i will have to type a little circular piece of paper to fit in it saying I have paid my tax!

Re my earlier jam jar problem

My thanks to Gerry & Primrose.

I found my local hardware store had Primrose's suggestion of De-solvit in stock.

On the jars in question I had to use it in combination with a Scotchpad but it worked, the jars have joined the clean jar stockpile

I'm tempted to put a "tax in post" disc in mine.... i must admit, it's many years since i have seen that done.

OH it became a classic of its time.
"Tax in Post" interpret as "I aint paid it" in many cases

Any other suggestions as to what we might put in our now defunct tax disc holders?

At least until someone comes up with a law against displaying defunct tax disc holders with humorous discs.....
