I've got fed up being indoors so decided to wander down to the greenhouse for a look-see. I have a row of large pots alongside the path and I'd forgotten that I had 4 with Pink Fir Apple potatoes in this year. Not expecting much to have survived this late on I tipped them out and have harvested 4 to 5kg of good potatoes. There were one or two squishy ones but very satisfying as it was unexpected.

I shall eat some and have enough to seed again.

Anyone else had a taste of the unexpected?

Nothing unexpected for us this year but when it has happened in the past the crop has always seemed to taste just that much better for being unexpected.

The danger when people start to believe their own publicity is that they often fall off their own ego.

At least travelling under the guise of the Pa Snip Enterprise gives me an excuse for appearing to be on another planet

I had the last sweet pepper and tomato and a fig from the greenhouse last week which was a bit of a record.

Most unexpected was the story of the parsnips! We skipped Christmas and went to Canterbury for 2 days. Upon our return, we stopped to say hello to my mum and dad. Apparently they dug up and ate my parsnips for Christmas dinner. They were delicious, mother told me, then I saw a phone pic of the biggest one......it is over 1lb and enormous! Then mum told me they are all that big, and that they did save the biggest one for me (thank you!) so I can have if for my dinner tonight. I cannot believe the size of the thing......am off to see how many are left in the ground and if the remaining ones are as spectacular as this one!

I'm still pulling some nice young sweet carrots, although the deer has got in and eaten most of the tops off.

Dear Retropants, i sowed my Parsnips really late in the year so, mine are the complete opposite to yours, mine are rather small, but they perfectly formed.

But i am glad yours are so magnificent... :)
Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

I can't believe just how big they are, I didn't do anything special! They are not woody either, got a whole roasting tin full from just one, no room for the spuds :)

Sorry, I'll stop now :)

I knew my parsnips were going to be really small as I had such poor germination & transplanted some self sown ones as I mentioned in another post. I was really surprised, yes they were small but very uniform & sweet. Even more impressed when I saw what they were selling for as mini veg in the supermarket!

Still taking some whooper carrots but the tops of mine are also being chewed but haven't any deer so expect a bunny or two may have got in. What's left is well buried but will see how clever the bunnies are - I expect more nibbles! :)
