Just popped into our local vets for a worm pill for the cat - £6.50 just for one pill.

Have you ever seen a poor vet? In monetary terms that is. I have met a couple of poor ones in other terms...

And 4 pipettes of flea treatment - £20.60.

I know you can send off for it on line but you need a prescription from the vet - and mine is charging £10 for that.

Diane, you can get 3 pippettes of Frontline flea stuff...probably other brands as well... for £15 at Asda and other large pharmacies, also, the larger pet stores, such as Pets at home. No prescription needed either. I'm not sure about worming tablets but I think the Big pet store does those too for far less than the vet charges. I haven't bought flea stuff from the vet for a couple of years.

I went down the store bought Frontline and my dogs ended up with fleas as the strength was less. I now use advocate from the vet as the carrier material in frontline was causing an open sore on one of my dogs. Don't know about the worm pills though. I usually get a bulk order with my lot when they have their jabs so the cost of worm tabs doesn't register.

Yes, I found Frontline didn't work anymore....maybe that's why you can buy it without prescription now? It's not strong enough anymore.

Oh dear. I use Frontline... touch wood.... my cat hasn't had fleas in the three years she has been with me and there are at least ten other cats within a short distance of my house.
My last cat was a semi longhair and she had never had fleas in the fifteen years I had her either.
Fingers crossed.....

More than two years ago the lady who used to trim Molly warned me about this problem because she had experienced it with her tribe of dogs, my partner always insisted I dosed Molly with Frontline stuff for fleas and the worming routine though I was never happy doing it on the basis dogs can't tell you when they are poorly until it's too late and I don't trust pharmaceuticals even when prescribed by a vet.

Unfortunately all we can do is take advise from veterinarians. I accept that they have the knowledge taught to them and gained from experience. They don't get to talk with dogs or cats or........ .

We used the shop baught flea drops on our cat until last year when the cat and the house was flea infested. Took him to the vets, he was flea free within a week, use a combi drops on him every 4-5 weeks and not had any fleas since. Took him to the vets last month for his check up and worming, 6months of flea drops and 1 worming tablet was £36.00. last time I got 3 months of flea drops and it was£20.00

We have five cats and spend around £30 a month on flea treatment from the vet. :(

The difference between the vet and Asda is

Asda sell Frontline - which just kills the fleas

Vet sell Frontline Combo - which also breaks the lifecycle by inhibiting the development of flea eggs and larvae. It's much better if there's a likelihood of fleas inhabiting your carpets or furniture.

I've tried the basic Frontline and it was hopeless. Frontline Combo and Advocate are the only ones that seem to work.

Fleas only hop on and off the cats to feed, the usually live in the house, so it's worth getting a good spray (vet again) and going round spraying the carpets and under the edges of the skirting boards etc. Apparently vacuuming makes them think a cat is padding past so they jump out and commit suicide by Dyson in our house.

I hate fleas :x
