Is it just my imagination or do the fruit trees seem to have masses of blossom this year? We have several trees in our garden and all seem to have lots more blossom than they have had in previous years. It looks like it is snowing in my back garden at the moment with petals coming off the pear and cherry trees. And now the apple trees are in bloom. I'm looking forward to bumper crops this year (I hope).

Hi Jennifer, I have just mentioned this in another topic (the asthma one) and I agree, all our trees have gone bonkers this year! I too, am hoping for a bumper crop!

Jennifer, i remember when i was a boy i used to do gardening at an old manor house. One year we had a huge amount of blossom on the fruit trees, the same as we have this year. And we had huge crops of fruit.
But this led to a big problem later on in the year for the old plum trees. They were that laden with fruit that they broke a good number of branches, and looked a right old mess. Really the fruit needed thinning or the branches propping, but there just wasn't the staff to do it.
So be warned everyone, unless we get a late frost you will need to thin or prop some branches this year.
Kind regards the Old Herbaceous.

Yes I've got tons of blossom too. Could be something to do with the weather last year or the very cold spring? Anyway I agree with OH. Tons of fruit set isn't always a good thing. It can exhaust the tree's cropping potential for next year too. So water lots now for a good fruit set but be sure to thin after the June drop if there's an excess of young fruit.
I thought it was just me. My minnarette, apple, plum and pear have gone beserk on the lottie. Blossom everywhere and it looks so pretty. Seems to be loads of fruit set.
I'll take note of what Old Herby says about breaking tree limbs ect and keep an eye on mine, thinning out the fruit is necessary.
The park I ususally go to looks gorgeous. There's blossom everywhere the eye can see, bluebells, wild primroses, azalias and rhoddodendrons of the most wonderful colours.
We are so lucky that we have the ability to stop and look at all this around us and to be able to appreciate the beauty of it all.
