Just noticed my first carrot fly damage to my carrots. Which raises the question. What are farmers allowed to spray on their carrots, that us mere mortals are not allowed too.

How big are your carrot shoots and what is the the "First sign of damage" ? Did you cover your carrots ?
It's a good question you ask, the answer may explain the difference in taste between home-grown and store-bought. Carrots are cheap to buy in their bagful so growers must have a cheap solution, because carrots are so cheap I only struggle to grow them for the lovely taste of carrot rather than the occasional taste of paraffin. (For want of a better description)
I'm interested because I have room for another sowing within my carrot tunnel, do I sow carrot or should I continue with the plan to transplant a box of spring onion into the bed. I found that spring onion happily re-establishes and I'm told and have read that onion in the close proximity of carrot is essential.
Under a net tunnel ?
Belt-and-braces ?
And what about garlic spray, I read somewhere about someone who swore by garlic spray for everything including bunions.

How are you supposed to start and maintain a healthy lifestyle if it completely removes a wine lover’s reason to live?

Crikey, you got going early.
I just remembered something, I sowed late because of something I read. Two danger periods for carrot fly are sometime in spring and then again in autumn. I need to lift my mesh again for maintenence, presumably carrot flies like most other small flying things can't cope on a Welsh windy day. Don't take that as the-gospel, I made it up.
It's Richard to you.

Hi RwH
I have always struggled to describe the peculiar taste of shop carrots but your paraffin comment says it all. I would love to know what they do to them to destroy the lovely taste of fresh carrots. Even when you buy bunches with green tops the taste is odd.

I just read a tip about earthing-up and using grass cuttings as a mulch, I'll try it whilst I have the netting off.
We have about 20 knots NE blowing over the beds so I'm hoping those flies are hiding away.
John, my first ever home grown carrot 2 years ago took me back my childhood when my brother used to grow carrot that we would fight for as a treat.
I still have to get better organised so I don't have gluts, I tried freezing. Not as nice. I tried storing beetroot in compost, not nice at-all after six weeks.
