Was browsing through the Thompson & Morgan catalogue this morning and noticed they were selling a "Rainbow Blend F1" tomato, which from the photograph seems to produce cherry plum size yellow, orange and red tomatoes on the same plant. I was intrigued how this could happen. I know you can have two different varieties of apples or pears on the same tree through grafting, but different colours of fruit on one plant just from one seed???

Is anybody tempted to give it a try? I've just sown all my tomato seeds for this year so would be interested in anybody else's results.

Are you sure it isn't just a mix of seeds that have different coloured fruits?
T&M do like their gimmicks don't they.

Well I think it is probably a mix of seeds but the catalogue doesn't make it at all clear. I can't imagine that plant science has progressed that rapidly to produce different coloured tomatoes from a single plant. However, I have just emailed to ask them. I should have waited until tomorrow (April 1st) and then they would have thought they had an idiot trying an April Fool question!

Well, it does list the four different varieties!

Tomato 'Katiebell' (yellow)
Tomato 'Lizziebell' (orange)
Tomato 'Luciebell' (red)
Tomato 'Flamingo' (pink)
