Whatever next?

A spring drought, followed by the wettest, coldest and dullest summer in memory, a very wet winter, the coldest March on record and an Easter that looks more like a white Christmas. -5C again this morning (and we are in the west (said to be best), and more cold forecast into April. Just as well it's sunny all of every day here.

What do all of you anticipate (note hope for) will come our way next?

Well Alan, just before I read your post I was just thinking of posting something along the lines of 'how do we cope with a little Ice Age?' I have just checked the mean daily temperatures here for the last 7 days and they were all minus! And for all of us who believe the Sun is the main driving force in our weather rather than CO2 it is also bad news as the Sun continues to behave more as if it were a minimum rather than a maximum. And if the prediction of some scientists are to be believed, and they are the ones that look beyond 30 years and don't rely on retro-fitting computer models, then we could have 30 years of cooler weather. Which is not to say that we won't get the odd really hot summer, which is what happened in the 17th century. So maybe this year...

Well, i think we are in for the most glorious summer, with long sunny days and just the right amount of rain at night. We will also be laden with the most perfect, tastiest crops we have ever grown.

If we don't, blame me.

This time last year, we were 6 days away from the start of a hosepipe ban.

I'm pretty sure we won't have that this year

As for what we will have. I predict a wet and gloomy summer, but hope I'm wrong and OH is correct

Hosepipe ban? Funny you should say that but I was talking to someone down the road in our allotments which I keep an eye on and he was commenting on how dry it was. Said, 'we'll be having a hosepipe ban next'!

Here in Carmarthenshire we've only had about 60% of normal rainfall!

Speaking as somebody whose septic tank won't actually drain at the moment because the water table is so high in the surrounding fields... bring on the drought!!! It'll smell better......

First spring-like day since..... Temperature reached a dizzy 9C and the wind was bearable, the birds singing, I demolished the old fruit cage, took the peas and mangetout out of the greenhouse and a few other tidying up things. The one good thing about the prospect of another 2 weeks of this is that I have a chance of really tidying up the garden before the weeds take over as usual! And it should be dry!!

Yes, we have commented how dry it has been lately. The snow is evaporating rather than thawing and the ground is quite dry now. Glad to have got everything dug before the snow and hard frosts, because the frosts have broken down all the clods beautifully.

For those of you who remember the vicious 1947 winter, may also remember that it was followed by a very hot and dry summer. So here is hope yet.
