Back in the 50's when I was somewhat younger than I am now I seem to recollect my Mother, working on the land, picking runner beans from rows on the ground. Would they have been similar varieties to those we traditionally grow up sticks now?.

More than likely these were dwarf French beans. They are similar in many ways. There are dwarf runner bean varieties — Hestia is one that comes to mind — but I don't think they were around in the 50s.
Allotment, but little achieved.

Dear Ken,
pickwick would have been the variety you would have grown I think.
Regards Sally Wright.

The forerunner to Hestia was Hammond Dwarf Runner Bean which was certainly around in the 1940's. I remember growing them by mistake and wondering why they didn't climb the trellis provided above. In truth it was a cruel joke played upon me by my grandfather who gave me the seed!
The only thing I can say is that I had a very good prolific crop.
