The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has downgraded mackerel from its list of fish suitable to eat.

Hi Alan, Yes, I heard that on the news. What a pity, I had a lovely plump beautifully fresh one from the fishmonger last week and was going to have another this Friday, but will now choose something else - don't want to be party to wiping out another fish species!

yet more scaremongering.....if you look at the quote from alans link
"Because it is found in greater quantities in their waters, the Icelandic and Faroese fishing industries have unilaterally decided to vastly increase the amount of the species that they catch."

why should we suffer when it is other countries who should get their house in order? other countries eg spain are raping our fishing grounds yet cry when we try & fish LEGALLY in their own waters, as per the scallop wars with france. time our government stood by our fishermen as the french do with their own. stop the foreign pair trawlers that hoover up every living thing on the seabed.

as for mackerel , I will continue to not only eat it ,but also use it as bait to catch flounders which are just as tasty.

i have sea fished for years and still do i share a boat with a mate we have it in liverpool marina, mackerel have been on the decline for a few years now we no longer get the summer inshore run you have to fish well offshore to catch any decent amount this has come far to late, i have to agree with the comment on foreign trawlers we should put a twenty mile exclusion zone around our coast, it always annoys me when i visit spain and see the prawns and shrimp on sale over there most of which is caught in scotland and sold in spain for a fraction of the price we are charged over here
